After years of work on the hit reality TV show The Deadliest Catch, California based producer Christian Skovly could not seem to shake Dutch Harbor from his mind. Throughout the years he has stayed connected to Alaska; he even put down his recording equipment to work on a fishing boat in Cook Inlet, but it is finding the history of Dutch Harbor that has kept his attention in the Last Frontier.
“I visited Dutch back in 2007, and working on that show and talking to people both in town and on the boats, I would hear these stories about Dutch Harbor and how it use to be; and I found it fascinating.”
After leaving Dutch Skovly tried looking into the history of the remote town, but he didn’t find much. This only fueled his personal history project.
“I am hoping to add a different perspective to what we know Dutch Harbor to be. We know it from the television show but the in town stuff is rarely visited, it is all mostly out on the water. So not only do I want to hear from the fishermen, everybody surrounding that in that town.”
Skovly wants to hear from bartenders, law enforcement, cannery workers, families, or anyone who lived and worked in Dutch Harbor during the 70’s and 80’s.
“I want to get the perspective of this boom town. Many people have told me that it was the Wild West in the middle of nowhere. Where a lot of money was being made and where a lot of interesting people and stories happened from this time and this place.”
The Dutch Harbor history project, Skovly says it is in the first phase. He feels that people’s responses and stories will decide where the project will go next.
“As I talk to people more and more I will get a better idea of how it should be compile; and I think the information itself and the stories are going to dictate that.”
