“We focus on promoting economic activity and conducting advocacy for the fifty plus communities of Southwest Alaska.  The region is large so we spread between Kodiak, Bristol Bay, and the Aleutians.”

Erik O’Brien is SWAMC’s Interim Director. He says the group networks with over one hundred members. The main connection being fish.

“The one unifying need of the whole industry is making the most value out of fisheries and seafood. Because that is really the one single thing everyone has in common.”

SWAMC is bringing a whole new way of thinking to the summit.

“This years theme is titled “Accessing Opportunity.” We are approaching from a system’s thinking way to understand the total value of our resources.”

The presentations and workshops will cover a variety of economic needs.

“On our first day, our energy day the main thing we are looking at is how do you bring down the overall cost of energy, so all are topics will be geared toward answering that one question. Our second day we are going to be looking at developing our human capitols, so for us that means looking at our education, training and workforce development systems that we have in place and how we can make those better. Then on the fisheries day is all leading to the one idea of… what’s  the best for maximum sustained benefit for the people of Alaska.”

Alaska candidates Walker and Mallott have filled seats  for the Governors debate, but still no word from Governor Parnell . The SWAMC Meeting begins march 5th thru the 7th at the Captain Cook in Anchorage. For more information about the summit go to  www.swamc.org .
