As the Kodiak salmon season nears, the St. Paul Harbor is loaded with seiners. Fishermen share their excitement as they prepare for the summer months.

“It will be about the same as last year. But value wise it will be worth more to the fleet because the prices should creep up a little.”

“It’s going to be a great summer. I’ve heard good things about it. You never know until you go out there and try.”

“It should be a decent season, if the fish show up. And the price should be ok.”

“Oh yeah, this year is going to be one of the more epic years ever in the history of Kodiak.”

Some predictions more farfetched than others.

“Well little known fact is with all that nuclear waste that was spilled into the ocean during the Japan tsunami, not only is there going to be buoys showing up on the beaches here soon, but pinks the size of dolphins, reds the size of salmon sharks are going to be caught and harvested in these here waters. And with the prices we are getting this year I wouldn’t be surprised to see the fishing fleet double, maybe triple.”

And there are always challenges to any fishery.

“The Line ups. A lot of boats out there I think. So fighting for turns and getting in line.”

“The normal, you know weather, competition within the fleet, and staying away from town.”

“There’s always the challenge to just keep all your equipment running, and keep your crew together and focused. And be able to stay on the grounds and stay productive.”

“It’s our first year and anything that you don’t want to happen for your first year running your own boat is going to happen. Everything is going to go wrong, I’m ready for the challenges, bring them on. But you know it’s all going to be a learning experience in the end.”

Fish Radio wants to wish everyone another safe and successful salmon season.
