This week five Alaska candidates running for the U.S. Senate will gather to discuss Alaska’s Fishing Industry in Kodiak. It is being held at the high school Auditorium from 7-9. It will be broadcasted live statewide on the Alaska Public Radio Network and streamed live atwww.KMXT.org .
Director Trevor Brown talks about the line up-
“We have a great lineup. We have five candidates attending the debate. Joining us will be, Senator Lisa Murkowski, Democratic Candidate Ray Metcalfe, Libertarian Candidate Joe Miller, Independent Candidate Margret Stock, and Independent Candidate Breck Craig. They will be discussing Alaska’s Fishing Industry. All of the questions will pertain to the fishing industry and we are going to have a good discussion with the candidates.”
This debate puts fishing in the spotlight. Kodiak’s Senator Gary Stevens is this year’s moderator and the questions have been submitted by fishing entities around the state, like United Fishermen of Alaska and ASMI.
“So we should have a broad range of questions from around the state. The panelists are Julie Bonnie with ground-fish data bank, Jeff Stephens with Alaska Fisheries Marketing Association, and Julie Matweyou our local marine advisory program representative.”
Brown says the candidates are excited for the lively debate
“The panelists will be asking a number of questions. We are going to allow questions to the candidates to each other and then there will also be a speed round, where we ask general information questions and see what candidate gets the most right.”
Brown notes that the fisheries debate goes back to the early 90’s, and Kodiak is lucky to host the event throughout the years.
“It’s a great service to Kodiak, to Alaska fishing communities, and Alaska in general. It is the state’s largest private sector employer. I think the candidates realize the importance of the fishing industry and that its viability is very important to the state of Alaska.”
The U.S. Senate Fisheries Debate is Wednesday October 12th from 7-9 pm.
