A new salmon society is reaching out to anyone who feels a connection to salmon. From salmon researchers, salmon fueled communities, and salmon lovers, The Center for Salmon and Society is asking for help from all over the state to gain a wider perspective on the future of Alaska’s salmon from habitat to harvesting. 
Dr. Courtney Carothers from University of Alaska at Fairbanks-
“There are some folks at the university that are really interested in bringing together more diverse voices to comment on issues about salmon and sustainability. And not just natural science, like what we know about salmon and habitat, but we want to hear from people who come from salmon dependent communities, salmon dependant cultures, a really diverse set of people that are in our state that have a huge stake in the sustainability of salmon.”From today through Thursday the University and the Salmon Society is hosting a workshop for anyone who wants to talk about long term salmon challenges and help find solutions.”
Professor Milo Adkins explains-
“We decided to look at habitat protection, and the tension between protecting habitat and the development people want to do. On the second day is a little more focused on issues that the communities are experiencing, so there will be sessions on racial equity on the salmon economy, and markets on governance, and then on community sustainability and well being.”
Carothers says they will have four working groups on the Thursday.
“They will meet for the full day to talk about state developing problem statements, developing sets of goals for what we want to work toward in the future.”
